This track serves as my experimentation with sounds associated with video games from the 1980s through 8-bit audio. While I previously focused on the nostalgic atmosphere of arcade machines from the same era through the audiovisual Galactic Stinger (2016), 8-Bit Improvisation concentrates on audio from home video game consoles. I primarily used the Piconica, Lexis Audio Editor, and CD-ROMantic smartphone apps (available for Android). Piconica features synthesizers that replicate the timbres and virtual instruments heard on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), or Family Computer (Famicom, as known in Japan). That app also enables users to internally record up to three minutes of music and sound effects. Using Lexis Audio Editor, I added “Echo” effects and normalized the stereophonic track. I also included one of the “Nightcore” effects via CD-ROMantic to give 8-Bit Improvisation an ethereal, Impressionistic musical texture. I plan on expanding the track into a series of other musical tracks that incorporate 8-bit audio through Piconica in the near future.
