Program Notes:
This piece functions as both a "sequel" to The Legend of Chufle (Poem for Flute and Piano) [2013-14] and a re-composition with musical ideas that I previously developed in 2022 and allowed myself more time to expand upon to give the music more direction. I originally wrote the music as the Impromptu No. 2 (2022) for piano and electronics, but I gradually grew dissatisfied with the overall sound. It proved better for me to rename, rewrite, and lengthen the piece by incorporating a flute part with the piano and musical cues for the stereophonic electronics playback. The electronics track in Poem No. 2 stems from a reworked version of my Tucson Soundwalk, which originally consisted of raw audio from Nature. I decided to edit the track by applying Musique concrète by distorting the natural sound to give it a more dreamlike effect that also complemented the acoustic segment of Poem No. 2. The end result is a musical "poem without words," where each electronic and acoustic section can be discerned as a specific "stanza."
