Since I began working on compiling video game music tracks three years ago, I intended to create a virtual educational resource: one that would help to expand upon and function as a guide to research in ludomusicology while also approaching the topics and subtopics from global perspectives. I have currently amassed hundreds of musical tracks in the process. Part of that process involves working around obstacles concerning copyright and adapting to sudden updates to VGM catalogs and formatting, such as with periodic additions to Nintendo Music. That music streaming service, available through a Nintendo Switch Online paid subscription for the Switch or Switch 2 video game consoles, now features a desktop version that subscribers can access directly from a computer or laptop. (The previous version functioned exclusively via a smartphone application.).
Nintendo Music has also recently updated their service to include soundtracks from the Virtual Boy hybrid console handheld. While critics and gamers alike initially regarded the Virtual Boy as a commercial failure for Nintendo upon its release in 1995, the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack version contains notable differences from the original hardware. The newer version allows the player to insert their Switch or Switch 2 console into the visor and play the emulated games while looking through the machine. They can also adjust the color filter for the games to suit their preference instead of playing only in red and black. The Nintendo Music update coincides with new and previously unreleased games exclusive to the Virtual Boy application on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. Due to these updates, I will modify some of the extant VGM lists on my website to conform with the Virtual Boy soundtracks currently available on Nintendo Music.
