Some Background Information About Mario Paint
Mario Paint functions as a multimedia arts edutainment program. Originally designed for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1992 and ported to the Nintendo Switch Online service for both the Switch and Switch 2 consoles in 2025, Nintendo initially created the program in an effort to appease concerned parents, who wanted their children to learn valuable cognitive skills while playing video games. Players can draw, paint, create stamps/game sprites, use coloring books, compose music, and create looped animated short films by combining visuals and audio from said features. Mario Paint also includes a minigame called "Gnat Attack" to provide players both short breaks and to test dexterity and speed by swatting flying insects and bugs.
The original SNES version of Mario Paint came packaged with the program on a cartridge, the "SNES Mouse" peripheral and a mousepad: converting the SNES console into a miniature computer, with the program functionality tied to the mouse. The Switch and Switch 2 versions of Mario Paint retain the mouse functionality via connecting a USB computer mouse (on the Switch) or by using one of the Joy-Con 2 mice (on the Switch 2). Readers can find more information concerning the strengths and limitations in the Mario Paint "Composer" via my blog post from August 7, 2025 on the topic.
